Previous permanent employment

Mitsubishi Electric
Managing Director (1997 – Jan 2000)
Motherboard Division

Mitsubishi Electric is an international Corporation with a turnover of 30 Billion dollars, part of the Mitsubishi conglomerate ($300B). It designs, manufacturers and sells a vast range of engineering products including computers, satellites, mobile phones, heavy electrical equipment and software products.

I formed the Motherboard Division in 1997, a new division of Mitsubishi Electric. The objective was to create an OEM sales, design and manufacturing company that would channel Mitsubishi’s computer technology into the OEM markets. My brief was to achieve profitability within 2 years and to secure a ‘top ten’ position based on the Mitsubishi Quality and Engineering strengths. As Managing Director I was totally responsible for all aspects of a starting an international business, strategy, P&L etc.

Within the first year the division had achieved break-even with sustained high growth, sales of over $12M with 80% of sales being export (USA & Europe). By the end of the second year sales exceeded $30M with a gross margin of 25% (8% net).

Despite entering a market dominated by low-cost Far East competition we reduced manufacturing costs to within 5% of the cheapest Chinese vendors and were able, due to our unique value propositions, to achieve a substantial sales price premium. These value propositions very effectively locked in customers, resulting in average 3-year customer contracts, unique in the industry. Our customer list included premier accounts such as Microsoft and NCR.
In addition to my role as the MD of the motherboard division I remained as VP of Mitsubishi’s Technology & Manufacturing Division.

Roles & Responsibilities:
· Managing Director
· Business strategy and implementation
· Successful formation and growth of the Division
· Sales & Marketing (setting up sales/support teams in UK, USA, Germany & France)
· R&D
· IT development & support
· Customer support strategies including Web and e-commerce strategies
· Manufacturing (internal and outsourced)
· Financial strategy, P&L responsibility

Achievements:
· Creation of a successful business division from scratch
· Exceeded profit, growth and market share targets
· Successful integration of diverse teams
· Improved productivity by over 400% using modular design processes
· Created entire new product range, penetrated new market area
· Out-sourcing of manufacturing, halving overall manufacturing costs
